Some people don’t avoid the dentist because they’re careless. They avoid it because the chair is genuinely more than they can face: a past experience that went badly, the needle, the sounds, the feeling of lying back with no control over what happens next.

If that’s you, you’re not weak and you’re not being dramatic. You’re one of a very large number of guests carrying dental problems they can’t bring themselves to deal with. Sedation dentistry can help — from deeply relaxed to, in selected cases, fully asleep, with many people remembering little of the treatment.

The Thing That Actually Reassures People: Who’s Looking After You

Here’s what most people are really afraid of. Not the filling. Not the drill. Being sedated, handing over consciousness and trusting someone with it. So let’s be clear about how it works.

Your sedation is managed by a qualified anaesthetist who comes to the clinic for your appointment. Before anything happens, they medically screen you to make sure sedation is safe for you specifically, and during treatment their entire job is you: managing your sedation and monitoring you the whole way through. Dr NaMoo does the dentistry. The anaesthetist does nothing but keep you safe and comfortable. Two sets of hands, two separate responsibilities: you are not being watched by someone also trying to concentrate on a tooth.

Your Options

Sedation isn’t one thing. What suits you depends on your health, your anxiety, and the treatment you need, and we work that out with you before anything is booked.

Comfort-first, no sedation. For many nervous paitents, what helps most is time, a slower pace, a stop signal that gets honoured, noise-cancelling headphones and a warm blanket. Sometimes that’s genuinely enough, and we’ll try it first if it might be.

IV sedation. Managed by the visiting anaesthetist, this leaves you deeply relaxed and drifting through the appointment, not fully unconscious, but most people remember very little. It generally suits younger, healthy guests, confirmed by the anaesthetist’s screening.

General anaesthetic. Fully asleep and unaware throughout, arranged through our partner facility. Where IV sedation isn’t suitable on health grounds, this is usually the pathway instead.

Not sure which is right for you? That’s exactly what the consultation is for.

Getting It Done in Fewer Visits, Not More

Most guests who come to us for sedation don’t have one problem. They have several, because staying away for years lets things add up, and facing all of that awake, across a dozen separate appointments, is often exactly what feels impossible. So we try not to ask you to.

Under sedation, we can usually combine treatments, doing more in each visit than you could comfortably face awake. IV sedation has safe time limits on how long you can be under, so a large amount of work may still need more than one visit, and we won’t rush past what’s safe to fit it all in. General anaesthetic allows longer, but the number of visits still depends on how much treatment you need.

At your consultation we’ll map out exactly how many visits your treatment realistically takes: a handful of times, comfortably, instead of dreading it fifteen.

What Sedation Actually Costs Here

Here’s something worth knowing before you call anywhere: we don’t charge extra for sedation. We charge for the dental treatment we do – the same fee whether you’re sedated or not – with no sedation surcharge, no markup, and no “comfort fee.” The sedation itself is billed separately, by the anaesthetic team, because they’re the ones providing it, and it depends on the type of sedation and how long your treatment takes.

Sedation dentistry doesn’t have to mean a vague premium on everything. With us, the dentistry costs what the dentistry costs, and the sedation is a separate, transparent line from the anaesthetic team who provide it.

Sedation isn’t a flat fee. It’s billed separately by the anaesthetic team and depends on the type of sedation and how long your treatment takes.

We’ll help you get a clear estimate — dental treatment from us, sedation from the anaesthetic team — before you commit to anything. See our Payment Plans.

Who Sedation Dentistry May Suit

Sedation may be worth considering when:

  • You have moderate to severe dental anxiety or phobia
  • You’re afraid of needles, drills, or the sounds and smells of a clinic
  • You have a strong gag reflex or sensory sensitivity
  • You find it difficult to sit through longer appointments
  • A past dental experience left a mark
  • You have a lot of treatment needed in one go, and would rather not face it awake across many visits

And one more: guests who’ve avoided dentistry so long that the amount of work needed now feels overwhelming. Sedation lets a lot of that happen while you’re comfortable, sometimes in far fewer visits than facing it awake would take.

If It’s Been Years, This Is Often Exactly How Guests Come Back

The guests who benefit most from sedation are frequently the ones who’ve stayed away the longest: years of avoidance, a growing sense of dread, a quiet certainty that whatever’s going on in there must be bad by now, and that they’ll be judged for it the moment they open their mouth.

Nobody here will judge you. Not for how long it’s been, not for the state of things, not for needing to be asleep to get through it. You came, and that’s the part that matters. For a lot of people, sedation is what finally makes coming back possible: the treatment gets done while they’re comfortable, and the thing they’d been dreading turns out to be more manageable than they feared.

What the Rest of Your Day Looks Like

People worry about the sedation itself. They worry just as much about afterward, and nobody tells them what to expect, which makes it feel like something to dread. So, honestly: you’ll be groggy for a few hours, and you won’t be able to drive, which is why a responsible adult needs to take you home and stay with you for a while.

Most people spend the rest of the day resting at home, the couch, not much else. Some feel a little dopey or have hazy patches of memory from the appointment, and that’s normal and passes. Any soreness afterward relates to the dental treatment itself, not the sedation, and we’ll give you clear, specific aftercare for whatever was done. Most people feel back to themselves by the next day.

Safety, Because You’re Right to Ask

Sedation is safe when it’s done properly, and “properly” is the whole point.

Qualified anaesthetist. Not a dentist multitasking, a specialist manages your sedation.

Medically screened first. If sedation isn’t safe for you, we find another way.

Monitored throughout. Someone whose only job is watching over you.

A responsible adult. To take you home and stay with you, since you won’t be able to drive.

We won’t tell you there’s zero risk, because no honest clinic can. We’ll tell you it’s carefully assessed, properly staffed, and never rushed. Read more about our Slow Dentistry approach.

Dr NaMoo Park, principal dentist at Facial Harmony

Meet Dr NaMoo Park

Your sedation dentistry is planned and delivered by Dr NaMoo Park, co-owner and principal dentist at Facial Harmony, registered with the Dental Board of Australia. Facial Harmony is a certified member of the Slow Dentistry Global Network. He works closely with the anaesthetic team so that anxious guests can have complex or long-delayed treatment safely and comfortably, and he’d always rather help someone through their fear than let it cost them their teeth.

If it’s been years, or if you’re frightened, say so when you call. That’s exactly who this is for.

Calling for Someone Else?

If it’s not you, if it’s someone you love who’s too frightened to pick up the phone, call us yourself. A lot of people finally get care because a partner or a family member made the first call for them. We’re very used to that conversation, and we’ll help you work out how to approach it.

More About Sedation Dentistry

Is sedation dentistry safe?

It’s safe when properly planned, staffed and monitored. A qualified anaesthetist manages your sedation, screens you medically beforehand, and monitors you throughout while Dr NaMoo focuses on the dentistry. Not everyone is suited to every type of sedation; your health and history are assessed first, and if IV sedation isn’t safe for you, a general anaesthetic pathway may be used instead.

IV sedation vs general anaesthetic

With IV sedation you’re deeply relaxed but not fully unconscious, and most people remember very little. It generally suits younger, healthy guests, confirmed by the anaesthetist’s screening. With general anaesthetic you’re fully asleep and unaware throughout, arranged through our partner facility, usually the pathway when IV sedation isn’t suitable on health grounds.

How the cost works

We charge only for the dental treatment, with no sedation surcharge. The anaesthetic team bills separately for the sedation itself, based on the type and duration. A Medicare rebate is often available toward the anaesthetic fee, though it varies from person to person.

What you need to arrange

A responsible adult to take you home and stay with you afterward. You won’t be able to drive, and you’ll be given clear aftercare instructions specific to the sedation used.

Sleep & Sedation Dentistry in Box Hill: Frequently Asked Questions

Is sleep dentistry the same as being fully asleep?

Not always. IV sedation means deeply relaxed but not fully unconscious, most people remember little. General anaesthetic means fully asleep and unaware. We’ll explain which suits you at your consultation.

How much extra does sedation cost?

From us, nothing. We charge only for the dental treatment, with no sedation surcharge. The anaesthetic team bills separately for the sedation itself, and a Medicare rebate is often available toward their fee.

Who actually does the sedation?

A qualified anaesthetist who comes to the clinic for your appointment. They screen you medically first, then manage and monitor your sedation throughout while Dr NaMoo does the dentistry.

Will I remember anything?

With IV sedation, most people remember very little, though it varies. With general anaesthetic, you’re unaware throughout.

Can I drive home afterward?

No. You’ll need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you.

Do I qualify for IV sedation?

The anaesthetist decides that, based on a medical screening. It generally suits younger, healthy patients. If you don’t qualify on health grounds, a general anaesthetic pathway may be more appropriate.

Is sedation only for severe anxiety?

No. It also suits a strong gag reflex, sensory sensitivity, longer or more complex treatment, or simply wanting a lot of delayed work done comfortably in fewer visits.

Is there a simpler option if I'm just a bit nervous?

Often, yes. For many people, a slower pace, a stop signal and a calmer appointment are enough, with no sedation at all. There may also be things worth discussing at your consultation to help take the edge off.

What if it's been years since my last visit?

That’s one of the most common reasons patients come to us for sedation. You won’t be judged. We’ll assess where things are and plan a manageable, comfortable way forward.

Can you do all my treatment in one visit?

Often we can do far more in each visit than you could face awake, which usually means far fewer appointments overall. IV sedation has safe time limits, so a large amount of work may still need more than one visit. At your consultation we’ll map out realistically how many visits your treatment takes.

How will I feel afterward?

Groggy for a few hours, so you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you. Most people rest at home for the day and feel back to themselves by the next. Any soreness relates to the dental treatment rather than the sedation.

Can I book this for my partner or parent who's too scared to call?

Yes, and it’s more common than you’d think. Many people finally get care because someone close to them made the first call. Ring us and we’ll help you work out how to approach it with them.

Can I book just to ask questions?

Yes. The consultation doesn’t commit you to treatment or sedation. It’s a conversation first.

Do you see patients from outside Box Hill?

Yes, patients travel from Doncaster, Mont Albert, Surrey Hills and across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs for this.
