Teeth Whitening in Box Hill

With Dr NaMoo Park, registered with the Dental Board of Australia. Facial Harmony is a certified member of the Slow Dentistry Global Network. Conservative-first: we recommend the option that genuinely suits your teeth, not the biggest treatment on the menu.

You’re probably here because you’d like whiter teeth, and you’re not quite sure how to get there.

Maybe you’ve tried a supermarket kit and found it uneven, uncomfortable or underwhelming. Maybe you’re weighing up whitening at home versus in the chair. Or maybe you’re wondering whether whitening will even work on your teeth.

At Facial Harmony Skin & Dental in Box Hill, we start by checking that whitening is the right tool for the result you want, and we’re honest with you if it isn’t. Professional whitening isn’t magic. It’s the same chemistry as a home kit, done with stronger, controlled products, your gums protected, and a dentist watching how your teeth actually respond. That’s the difference between a controlled treatment and a gamble.

What Teeth Whitening Is, and What It Can’t Do

Whitening lightens your natural tooth enamel. Knowing the limits before you book saves disappointment after:

  • It won’t change crowns, veneers, bonding or fillings. White fillings, porcelain and composite restorations don’t whiten at all, they keep the shade they were made in. If any sit in your smile line, we’ll talk about what that means for the overall look.
  • Heavily restored or root-treated teeth may not whiten evenly with the teeth around them.
  • Some discolouration is intrinsic, from certain medications, past trauma, or how the tooth formed. Deeply banded or spotted teeth (for example, from tetracycline or fluorosis) whiten less predictably, and can look more spotted at first before evening out.
  • Some sensitivity is normal, usually mild and temporary, and supervision is how we keep it that way.

If whitening won’t get you the result you’re picturing, we’d rather say so before you pay. Sometimes the better answer is a clean first, sometimes bonding or veneers, and sometimes your teeth are already a good shade and you don’t need this. We mean that.

Which Whitening Is Right for You?

There’s no single “best” whitening. There’s the one that fits how gradual you want to go, how your teeth handle sensitivity, and whether you want something reusable. A rough guide:

  • Trying whitening for the first time, or after a mild lift? Opalescence Go ($109) is a good place to start.
  • Want a home routine with a light, without custom trays? Pola Light ($179) fits.
  • Sensitive teeth, or want a reusable tray to maintain your result? Bespoke take-home ($299) is the better fit.
  • Want the biggest change in a single visit? In-chair Philips Zoom ($499) delivers that.

Opalescence GoPre-filled disposable trays, 15 to 20 minutes a day for about 10 days. Mint flavoured, moulded to your teeth, though less closely than custom trays.A low-commitment first try and mild staining.$109
Pola LightReusable take-home kit: you load the gel yourself and use a rechargeable LED light, two short sessions a day over 5 to 10 days (four gel syringes included). The trays are a universal fit rather than custom, so they use more gel to reach the teeth.A home routine with a light, without stepping up to custom trays.$179

Take-home teeth whitening kit, Facial Harmony Box Hill

A Note on Value

Only Opalescence Go uses disposable, single-use trays that are repurchased each time. Pola Light and the bespoke trays are both reusable, you load the gel yourself and top up later. The difference between them is fit: Pola Light’s universal trays need more gel to reach the teeth, while the custom-fitted bespoke trays hold the gel against your teeth with very little waste, so over a few top-ups they can work out more economical, as well as more comfortable. Cheapest today isn’t always cheapest over time, we’ll talk you through it honestly.

Whiten Before Bonding or Veneers: The Sequence Rule

This one matters, and most pages skip it, including the part about timing.

There are two reasons to whiten before any bonding, veneers or crowns:

  • Colour. Whitening only changes your natural teeth; restorations are matched to whatever shade your teeth are on the day they’re made, and they don’t lighten afterwards. Whiten first and the restoration can be matched to your new, lighter shade.
  • Bond strength. Whitening temporarily dehydrates the teeth, and bonding to freshly whitened enamel weakens the bond. So after whitening, we allow 2 to 4 weeks for the teeth to rehydrate before bonding, veneers or crowns, for every whitening option, not just in-chair. It’s a short wait that protects how well the restoration holds.

So the sequence is: whiten, wait 2 to 4 weeks to rehydrate, then bond, veneer or crown. Do it the other way around and your natural teeth can end up lighter than the restoration, and rushing the wait can compromise the bond, either way the fix is redoing the work. Getting the order and timing right costs nothing; getting it wrong is expensive.

If you have a deadline, a wedding, a formal, a milestone, this is the single most important thing to plan around. Tell us the date and we’ll work backwards: whitening first, the 2 to 4 week rehydration window, then the restorations, so everything’s finished and matched in time. (Same advice as on our Smile Makeover and Dental Bonding pages, because it doesn’t change.)

Is Whitening Right for You? Our Approach

Before any gel touches your teeth, we confirm your teeth and gums are healthy enough to whiten. Active decay, gum inflammation, or a build-up of plaque and calculus can make whitening uncomfortable and patchy, so sometimes we’ll suggest a clean first and whiten a little later, so you actually get an even result. Whitening works best on a freshly cleaned surface.

If you book in-chair whitening and want it done on the day, Dr NaMoo assesses you at the appointment, and that assessment is included. If it’s suitable, we go ahead. If a clean would get you a better result, that clean is booked and charged separately, we won’t whiten over plaque and calculus just to keep the appointment moving. And if whitening genuinely isn’t the right tool for what you’re hoping for, we’ll tell you then, even if you’d rather we pressed on.

That’s the Slow Dentistry part: the honest answer, before the treatment, not the easiest sale.

Whitening isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children under 14, for anyone with a known peroxide allergy, with untreated dental problems, or with significant tooth sensitivity until that’s addressed.

Sensitivity, and Staying Comfortable

Some sensitivity during or after whitening is common and usually settles on its own; a mild over-the-counter pain reliever helps if you need it. If your teeth are normally sensitive, tell us before we start, it’s often why we’ll steer you toward the gentle overnight bespoke gel rather than a stronger option. You may also notice brief gum or lip irritation where gel meets soft tissue; we place protective materials to limit that, and it’s usually short-lived and minor.

During in-chair whitening you’re welcome to use our comfort menu: a ceiling-mounted TV with noise-cancelling headphones and streaming, or if you’d rather switch off, an eye massager or a vagus nerve stimulator.

Keeping Your Result

Whitening isn’t permanent, and coffee, tea, red wine, tomato-based foods and tobacco all re-stain over time, especially in the days right after treatment, when it helps to go easy on them. Reusable bespoke trays make an occasional top-up simple, which is why they suit anyone wanting to maintain their result.

Dr NaMoo Park, principal dentist at Facial Harmony

Meet Dr NaMoo Park

Your whitening is planned and, where relevant, carried out by Dr NaMoo Park, principal dentist at Facial Harmony and a registered dental practitioner with the Dental Board of Australia. Facial Harmony is a certified member of the Slow Dentistry Global Network. Dr NaMoo’s approach is conservative-first: the best dentistry is often the dentistry you don’t need, and whitening is no exception, the aim is a natural result using the least intervention that gets you there.

What Happens at Your Consultation

We examine your teeth and gums to confirm they’re healthy enough to whiten, and we talk through your goals, your current shade, the habits that contribute to staining, and any sensitivity you’ve had before. From there we recommend the option that fits, or a clean first, or, if it’s the honest answer, that you don’t need whitening at all. You’ll know the cost before anything begins.

You don’t need to have decided anything. A consultation is a conversation about whether whitening suits you and which option fits.

More About Teeth Whitening in Box Hill

What Whitening Can and Can't Do

Whitening lightens natural enamel only. White fillings, porcelain and composite restorations, crowns and veneers don’t whiten at all, and heavily restored or root-treated teeth may whiten unevenly. Intrinsic discolouration (medications, trauma, tetracycline or fluorosis) responds less and can look more spotted at first. We assess which type you have before recommending anything.

Whitening Before Bonding or Veneers: The Sequence Rule

Whiten first, then wait 2 to 4 weeks for the teeth to rehydrate before any bonding, veneers or crowns. There are two reasons: the restoration is matched to your lighter shade, and bonding to freshly whitened (temporarily dehydrated) enamel weakens the bond. The wait applies to every whitening option. In the wrong order, or rushing the wait, your teeth can end up lighter than the restoration or the bond can be compromised, and the fix is redoing the work.

How the Four Options Differ

Opalescence Go ($109): pre-filled single-use disposable trays, about 10 days. Pola Light ($179): reusable universal-fit trays you load yourself, plus a rechargeable LED light and four gel syringes, 5 to 10 days (uses more gel because it isn’t custom-fitted). Bespoke take-home ($299): custom trays scanned and 3D-printed in-house, minimal gel waste, gentle overnight or faster daytime gel, gentler than in-chair, reusable. In-chair Zoom ($499, +$150 trays): a supervised single visit of up to four 15-minute cycles, the largest single-visit change.

What Happens at the Appointment

We check your teeth and gums are healthy enough to whiten and discuss your goals, current shade, staining habits and any past sensitivity. For in-chair, we protect your gums and whiten in up to four 15-minute cycles under the Zoom Whitespeed light, with set-up beforehand and aftercare afterwards. For bespoke, we scan and 3D-print custom trays in-house and give you clear instructions. If a clean is needed first, that’s booked separately. If whitening isn’t suitable, we’ll tell you before proceeding.

Sensitivity and Comfort

Mild, temporary sensitivity is common and manageable, and a mild over-the-counter pain reliever helps if needed. Tell us if your teeth are normally sensitive so we can choose a gentler gel. Brief gum or lip irritation can occur where gel meets soft tissue; we place protective materials to limit it. During in-chair treatment you can use the comfort menu: ceiling TV, noise-cancelling headphones, eye massager, or a vagus nerve stimulator.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Go easy on staining foods and drinks: coffee, tea, red wine, tomato-based foods and tobacco, especially in the days right after treatment. Bespoke trays are reusable for occasional top-ups.

Planning Around an Event

If you’re whitening ahead of a wedding, formal or other event, allow time and tell us the date so we can work backwards. Whitening needs a little lead time for any sensitivity to pass, and if you’re also having bonding, veneers or crowns, remember the 2 to 4 week rehydration window between whitening and the restorations, since whitening dehydrates the teeth and bonding too soon weakens the bond. The order is whiten, wait 2 to 4 weeks, then restore, so build that into your timeline. We’ll map it out with you at your consultation.

Cost and Health Funds

From $109 to $499 depending on the option, plus an optional $150 bespoke-tray add-on with in-chair. Whitening is often treated as cosmetic, but some funds contribute toward part of the cost depending on your cover, we can check for you on HICAPS on the day, so you don’t need to ring your fund. We’ll confirm your exact cost before we start.

Teeth Whitening in Box Hill: Frequently Asked Questions

How does professional whitening work?

It uses peroxide-based gels that break down staining within the enamel. Professional products are controlled in strength and applied with your gums protected, which is why they tend to work more evenly than store-bought kits, particularly on deeper surface staining.

Will whitening damage my enamel?

Professional whitening uses controlled peroxide concentrations and is applied with your gums and soft tissue protected. Temporary sensitivity can occur, but supervised whitening is designed to lighten enamel without harming it, one reason we recommend it over guessing with a stronger, unmonitored product at home.

How is professional whitening different from a chemist or supermarket kit?

Home kits use lower, one-size-fits-all concentrations and generic trays or strips that don’t fit your teeth closely, so results are often uneven. Professional whitening matches the strength and method to your teeth, protects your gums, and is guided by a dentist who’s checked your teeth are suitable first.

Will whitening work on my crowns, veneers or fillings?

No. Whitening only lightens natural enamel, crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings stay the shade they were made in, and heavily restored teeth can whiten unevenly. If any sit in your smile line, we’ll factor that in before you start.

Can I whiten if I have sensitive teeth?

Often, yes, tell us before we start. We can choose a gentler approach, such as the overnight bespoke gel, and manage sensitivity as we go. Significant, untreated sensitivity is something we’d address first.

Does whitening hurt?

Some sensitivity during or after treatment is common and usually mild and temporary; a mild over-the-counter pain reliever helps if you need it. If your teeth are normally sensitive, tell us and we’ll choose a gentler approach.

Can whitening remove all stains?

It’s effective on surface stains from food, drink and smoking. Intrinsic discolouration, from certain medications, trauma, tetracycline or fluorosis, responds less, sometimes not at all, and can look more spotted at first. We’ll tell you which type we’re seeing and whether whitening is the right tool.

Should I whiten before or after bonding or veneers?

Before, then wait. Whitening changes only natural teeth, and restorations are matched to your shade on the day they’re made, so whitening first lets them match your lighter teeth. Just as important, whitening temporarily dehydrates the teeth and bonding too soon weakens the bond, so we allow 2 to 4 weeks to rehydrate before any bonding, veneers or crowns. If you’re working to a deadline, tell us and we’ll plan the timing backwards from your date.

How long does the treatment take?

In-chair whitening is a single visit built around up to four 15-minute cycles, plus set-up and aftercare either side, so allow more than the light time for the appointment. Take-home options are used over 5 days to 2 weeks depending on the product and your starting shade.

How long will my results last?

Whitening isn’t permanent, and how long it holds depends on your diet and habits, coffee, tea, red wine and smoking all re-stain over time, and your oral hygiene. Reusable bespoke trays make occasional top-ups simple. We won’t quote a set number of months, because it genuinely varies person to person.

Am I a suitable candidate?

Most people with healthy teeth and gums are. Whitening isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children under 14, with a known peroxide allergy, with untreated dental problems, or with significant sensitivity until it’s managed. We confirm suitability at your consultation.

Will my teeth look natural, or too white?

That’s up to you, and it’s a conversation we have before we start. Our aim is your teeth looking their healthy best, bright and natural for your face, rather than an unnaturally uniform white. Whitening lifts your natural shade; it doesn’t have to be dramatic, and we’ll talk through the look you’re after so the result suits you.

Does whitening work on every kind of discolouration?

Not equally. Yellow-toned staining from food, drink, coffee and age tends to respond well. Grey or brown tones, and discolouration that comes from inside the tooth (medications, past trauma, or how the tooth formed), respond less and sometimes not at all. Part of your consultation is working out which kind you have, so we can tell you honestly what whitening is likely to do for you before you commit.

Is whitening covered by my health fund?

It’s often treated as cosmetic, but in our experience some funds do contribute toward part of the cost, depending on your level of cover. You don’t need to ring your fund to check, we can run it through HICAPS on the day and tell you on the spot what, if anything, comes back.
