Gentle Teeth Cleaning in Box Hill

No scraping. No metal hook. No flinching.

If you stopped going to the dentist because of the clean, you are not unusual, and you are not being precious.

The scraping is the part most people can’t stand: the sound of it, the way it finds a sensitive spot without warning, and the reflex where your whole body tenses and waits for it to be over.

At Facial Harmony in Box Hill, we clean teeth using EMS Airflow, a stream of warm water, air and a fine powder that lifts plaque and staining off the tooth, with no metal instrument scraping against your enamel. Most patients find it a completely different experience, and a lot of them hadn’t sat in a dental chair for years.

Facial Harmony clinic, Box Hill

Nervous? Call and ask. Tell us it’s been a while. That’s a normal way to start.

Why It Feels Different

Gentler teeth cleaning technique, no manual scraping

No manual scraping. The sensation people dread most simply isn’t part of it.

Less sensitivity teeth cleaning for sensitive teeth

A less abrasive powder. Gentler on the tooth surface than traditional polishing pastes.

Effective stain removal from tea coffee wine and smoking

Removes surface staining. From tea, coffee, red wine and smoking.

Supports gum health by disrupting biofilm

Disrupts biofilm. The bacterial layer that contributes to gum inflammation.

What It Actually Feels Like

Warm water. A fine spray. A slightly salty taste. That’s it.

The powder is soft (sodium bicarbonate or glycine), and it lifts plaque, biofilm and surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. The instrument never touches your tooth.

We won’t tell you it’s painless. Nobody honestly can, and if a clinic promises you that, be suspicious. If you have exposed roots or significant sensitivity, you may still feel something, but for most people, especially those who dread the scraping, it’s a different appointment entirely. And if hardened tartar has built up, some traditional scaling may still be needed alongside it; we’ll tell you if that’s the case rather than pretending one technique does everything.

We Show You. We Don’t Tell You Off.

This is the part we think matters most, and almost nobody does it.

At every cleaning visit, we apply a harmless dye that stains plaque bright so you can see exactly where it is, then we photograph it. Next visit, we do it again, and we compare, not to catch you out, but to show you.

Because “you need to floss better” is a useless thing to say to somebody. “Look, here, and here, on the inside of these two teeth. That’s where it’s building up” is actually useful. You can see it, and you know precisely where to aim. Over a few visits, you can watch it change. Most people have never been shown their own mouth in their life; they’ve just been told off in it. We’d rather hand you the evidence than the lecture.

While We’re Being Honest: About Your Gums

Do your gums bleed when you brush? Most people assume that’s normal. It isn’t.

Healthy gums don’t bleed when you brush them, any more than healthy skin bleeds when you wash it. Bleeding means inflammation, and inflammation is the beginning of gum disease.

Here’s the part that matters, and it’s the reason we’re saying it: gum disease is largely painless until it’s advanced. There’s no toothache, no warning, nothing that makes you pick up the phone. It quietly destroys the bone holding your teeth in, and bone does not grow back. A cavity can be filled; bone that’s gone is gone. It’s a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and the people it takes teeth from are overwhelmingly the people who felt fine and therefore didn’t go.

If it’s been years, that isn’t a reason to stay away. It’s the reason to come in. We’ll tell you where you stand, and if your gums are healthy, you’ll leave knowing that too.

If It’s Been a Long Time

Nobody here will comment on how long it’s been. Not a sigh, not a raised eyebrow at your X-rays, not a lecture about what you should have done.

You’d be astonished how many of our patients arrive after five, ten, fifteen years away. It’s one of the most common conversations we have, and it’s never a problem: it’s just where we’re starting from. You’re not behind. You’re here. If dental anxiety is part of what’s kept you away, that’s worth reading in its own right.

What It Costs

ServicePrice
Gentle Clean, EMS Airflow cleaning, plaque disclosing and photographs, and fluoride varnish$205
Comprehensive Examination, see what’s included below$199
Both together$399

New patient credit: new patients receive a credit toward their next visit, $25 with a clean, $20 with an examination, or $50 when booked together. Terms: credit applies to your next appointment at Facial Harmony, valid for 6 months from your first visit, one per new patient, not redeemable for cash.

We check your health cover on the spot through HICAPS, so you know your real out-of-pocket cost. Most extras policies cover a good portion of preventive care.

What’s Actually in the $199 Examination

This is not a look-and-a-poke. It’s the appointment that catches things while they’re still small.

  • Oral cancer screening: a soft tissue check of your mouth, tongue, throat and neck
  • TMJ and jaw assessment
  • Bite and grinding assessment, including wear patterns you can’t see
  • Gum health assessment
  • Full dental examination
  • Unlimited digital X-rays, including OPG at no extra charge
  • Intra-oral 3D scan
  • Clinical photographs
  • Sleep and airway screening: grinding and worn teeth can be a sign of a breathing problem at night, and we look for it
  • An unhurried conversation about what we found, what it means, and what your options are

Two of those deserve a mention on their own. Oral cancer screening takes a few minutes and almost nobody thinks about it, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that’s far better found early. And worn or cracked teeth from grinding can point to disrupted breathing during sleep: your dentist is often the first person in a position to notice it, and most people with sleep apnoea have no idea they have it. If that sounds familiar, our sleep apnoea and snoring page covers it in more depth.

That’s why the examination costs what it does. You’re not paying for a glance; you’re paying for the appointment that finds things while they’re still cheap and simple to fix.

If Your Gums Need More Than a Clean

Sometimes a clean isn’t enough. If gum disease has taken hold below the gum line, deeper cleaning of the root surfaces is needed. We do that here, and we’ll explain what’s involved, what it costs, and what happens if it’s left, before you decide anything. We’ll be straight with you about where you stand, not to frighten you, but because you can only act on information you actually have.

Meet Dr NaMoo Park

Cleaning technique at Facial Harmony is guided by Dr NaMoo Park, co-owner and principal dentist, registered with the Dental Board of Australia. Facial Harmony is a certified member of the Slow Dentistry Global Network. His view is straightforward: comfort is part of treatment, not an afterthought, and cleaning is usually the first thing to get rushed in a busy practice, even though it’s the one with the biggest long-term effect on whether you keep your teeth.

“Nobody should lose their teeth because a cleaning appointment frightened them off twenty years ago.”

This gentle technique is one part of a broader, unhurried approach to teeth cleaning at Facial Harmony.

Book a Clean That Doesn’t Involve Scraping

If a cleaning appointment is the reason you stopped going, this is the appointment worth trying: no scraping, no lecture, no comments about how long it’s been. Gentle clean $205, comprehensive examination $199, both $399. New patients receive a credit toward their next visit (terms above), and we check your health cover on the day.

More About Gentle Teeth Cleaning

Is it suitable for everyone?

Most people, but not all. Certain respiratory conditions, some medical histories, and specific sensitivities may mean we adjust the technique or use a different approach. We assess this rather than assuming.

Does it remove tartar too?

Air polishing is highly effective on plaque, biofilm and surface staining. Hardened tartar may still need traditional scaling. We’ll tell you honestly if you need both rather than pretending one technique covers everything.

Will it whiten my teeth?

It removes surface staining, from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter and cleaner. But it isn’t a whitening treatment, and we won’t pretend it is. It restores your natural shade rather than changing it.

What about crowns, veneers and implants?

Usually fine, with the appropriate powder and technique. We check what’s in your mouth first and adjust accordingly.

How often should I come?

It depends on your gum health and individual risk, not on a default six-month rule. Some people genuinely need three-monthly, others are fine annually, and we’ll tell you what you actually need, including when that’s less often than you expected.

Why the disclosing dye and photographs?

Because being told to floss more changes nothing, and being shown exactly where plaque is accumulating changes quite a lot. The photographs let us compare visit to visit, so you can see whether what you’re doing at home is working, and adjust where it isn’t.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

For most people, considerably less than traditional scaling. There’s no metal instrument scraping the tooth. We won’t promise it’s painless, because nobody honestly can, and if you have exposed roots you may still feel some sensitivity. Tell us and we’ll adjust.

Do you still use the scraper at all?

Only if hardened tartar requires it. Air polishing handles plaque, biofilm and staining. We’ll tell you what your teeth actually need.

How much does a clean cost?

$205, including the EMS Airflow clean, plaque disclosing and photographs, and fluoride varnish. A comprehensive examination is $199, or $399 for both. New patients receive a credit toward their next visit (terms apply).

Why is the examination $199?

Because it includes unlimited X-rays and OPG, a 3D scan, clinical photographs, oral cancer screening, TMJ and bite assessment, gum assessment, sleep and airway screening, and an unhurried discussion of what we found. It’s the appointment that catches things while they’re still small.

My gums bleed when I brush. Is that normal?

No. Healthy gums don’t bleed. Bleeding means inflammation, and inflammation is how gum disease starts. It’s worth having looked at, particularly because gum disease is painless until it’s advanced.

Is gum disease serious?

It’s a leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it destroys the bone holding your teeth in. Bone doesn’t grow back. It’s also largely painless until late, which is exactly why people don’t act on it.

It's been years since I saw a dentist. Will you judge me?

No. It’s one of the most common conversations we have. Nobody here will comment on it.

Will it damage my enamel?

The powders are chosen for their low abrasiveness, and it’s generally gentler on enamel than traditional polishing paste. If you have existing wear or exposed roots, we take that into account when choosing powder and technique.

Is this an extra I have to pay for?

No. It’s simply how we clean, not a paid upgrade.

Can I have it if I'm pregnant?

Tell us, and we’ll take it into account. Gum inflammation frequently worsens in pregnancy, so cleaning matters more, not less, but we’ll adapt the appointment.
